Why Everyone Needs a Donation Station

When Apartment Guide asked me to weigh in on one of an article about space saving tips and tricks for those working with a small footprint, my instant reaction was - CREATE A DONATION STATION!

A Donation Station: a designated spot in your home for donations to live before they leave the house.

When the goal is a simple, peaceful, clutter-free home, decluttering has to become a habit.

Having a designated spot for items you no longer need or love makes it SO much easier to create that habit.

Why a Donation Station is a Game Changer

It Makes Decluttering Part of your Daily Routine

  • Having a permanent spot for all outgoing items is a powerful (and daily) reminder to purge.

  • As you move through your day-to-day routines simply toss in any items that you or your family no longer need.

  • Less Hassle, Less thinking - just toss in the box - bada-boom-bada-bing!

It’s easy for the Whole Family to Follow

  • On a regular basis, I’ll open our Donation Station and find items that my husband or kids have added.

  • A concept so simple that even a 6 year old can follow it - winner!

Makes Donation Drop-off Easy

  • Once your box is full, donations are ready to be dropped off! No discussion needed. Just box them up and drop off.

It Works for All Families

  • Whether you’re a young family with small kids or an empty nester living solo - clutter accumulates! Having a station, keeps it at bay.

  • A Donation Station is helpful no matter what stage of decluttering you’re at. If you are in the early stages, working through decluttering the house, room by room, this system will be handy to tackle mini projects even on busy days - because you know you have a spot to toss everything temporarily. If your home is already simplified and you’re just maintaining, the station is there anytime you find something you want to pass along.

What you need to Get Started

A designated spot that is easy to access (but ideally small hands can’t reach it) + something to put donations in - a bag, bin, box, basket - anything will do!

And some motivation to get started :)

That’s it!

And remember that your Donation Station can include more than just donations - it can include returns, items passing along to friends or items you are wanting to sell :)

If you’re not convinced, create a temporary area for a few weeks and see if it helps. You might end up loving it:)

Thanks, as always, for following along and see you next time!

p.s. I stole the term ‘Donation Station’ from my sweet friend Dana who is one of the most organized (and sweetest) people I know. Thank you Dana! xo
