25 Things to Declutter in ‘25
Let’s make this the year we go from cluttered to CALM ❤️
1) Outdated Technology
One of our recent clients referred to old cords in their home office as ‘legacy cords’ and I can’t forget it - amazing, ha!
Let go of all that legacy technology in your home and feel lighter right away.
Examples: phones, tablets, power cords, accessories for technology you no longer own.
2) Old Textbooks
Whether they are in your basement, your parents’ basement, or you have your grown kids’ textbooks - LET. THEM. GO.
3) Surplus Craft Supplies
We see overflowing craft cupboards on the regular. Commit to using what you love and pass along the rest.
4) Empty Boxes
A little collection of empty boxes sounds harmless; but if it’s standing between you and a clutter-free space then maybe it’s time to say goodbye.
5) Paperwork
I totallyyyyyy get why this category is always last on the list - it’s tedious, boring and sometimes painstaking, BUT I promise you will feel SO good after.
We take shredding to our local office supply store for $1.49 per pound - worth every penny!
6) Hazardous Waste
Expired paint, dead batteries, broken phones, cleaning products - find out where to get rid of it in your area and let it go.
Easy way to instantly clean up a basement or garage.
7) Borrowed Items
A casserole dish from your friend that’s been sitting on your counter since Thanksgiving? A bouncy seat that you borrowed from your neighbour four years ago? You father-in-law’s rake?
Return it, make them happy, and clear your space :)
8) Bathing Suits
I have lost track of how many bathing suits that have lost their elasticity and had to be thrown away. If you have swimwear that nobody is using, please donate before it’s too late.
9) Spices
Sometimes tackling a whole pantry declutter is too intimidating, but focusing on one category is manageable. Spices and seasonings are often purchased for one recipe and never used again, creating a cluttered (and messy) pantry.
10) Office Shoes
The number of employees working from home has sky rocketed in the past few years - if you have ‘office’ shoes - or pants or dresses or pantyhose - that you simply aren’t wearing anymore, maybe it’s time to pass along to someone who could use them.
11) Unfinished Projects
Let’s make a promise to each other - we are either doing the project or letting it go - Okay??! Okay.
12) Party Supplies
e.g. a Spiderman birthday banner and your son is now 16.
No judgement, just pass along to someone who could use it :)
13) Pet Supplies
If you have pets, do you have an old collar, broken leash, expired meds, food they wouldn’t eat? - out it goes!
14) Linens
Keeping track of how many queen sized fitted sheets can be annoying - I get it! The easiest way to manage linens is to have less of them. Specifically, only what you use regularly.
15) Toys
This will be on every list I ever make until the end of time. Kids need wayyy fewer toys than we think.
We got rid of toys for 30 days in our house - here is what happened.
16) Alcohol
Those sticky, half empty bottles in the back of the cupboard that nobody drinks and you wouldn’t serve to anyone. Dump down the drain and recycle the bottles. (preferably, right now).
17) Unnecessary Furniture
Eliminating furniture can do miracles for opening up a space. Cleared floor spaces are magically calming for our hearts and brains.
Think: old nursing chairs, side tables with no purpose, a rug that just get’s in the way, bunk beds that are too bulky for the space, flat surfaces that have become dumping grounds.
18) Blankets
Not sure if this is a cold climate thing (we love our blankets, don’t we?), but purging even a couple of blankets can make a HUGE difference to closets/cupboards.
19) Metal Hangers
If you have a surplus of hangers, make these ones the first to go! Send them back to the dry cleaners or take to scrap metal - but just let them go.
20) Keys
Haven’t done a project yet that we haven’t come across keys that nobody knows what they are for. Farewell!
21) Systems that aren’t Working
Did you try some organizational systems that just aren’t working for you? Stop the shame - it’s nothing you are doing wrong - this just means it’s not right for you. Pass along and find something that DOES work.
22) Freebies
The bane of my existence! Whether it’s hats, shirts, toys, water bottles, keychains - unless you use them or love them say goodbye.
23) Hand-Me-Downs
Clothes, toys, kitchen ware - there is zero chance that you will love or need every hand-me-down that comes your way. If you don’t have a use for it, let’s donate to someone who will.
24) Unwanted Gifts
Repeat after me: I’m allowed to get rid of gifts.
Just because your Aunt Suzanne thought you would LOVE the wall hanging she saw in California doesn’t mean you have to love it.
Let go of the guilt and let go of the gift.
25) The Judgement of Others
Should also be on our list every year ❤️. You’re doing amazing and I’m so proud of you.
Remember - organized home, calm mind, peaceful heart xo
Cheering you on always,
Mary Ann K.
