Our DIY Master Bedroom Makeover (on a budget!)

We gave our bedroom a face-lift! And it feels amaaaaazing!

We wanted: simple, pretty, functional and inexpensive. And it turned out perfectly.

Here are the details….

Paint

Our bedroom was a little boys room when we moved in (and bright blue!). We lived with the colour for over three years while we were paying off our debt. So by the time we were ready to paint, we were SOooooo ready.

In order to create flow in the house, we used the same paint colour as our other two bedrooms - Gravity by Valspar.

Painting made up the largest part of our time AND budget, but it definitely had the biggest impact.

*We also spray painted our vent covers and curtain rod black which made a HUGE difference. I still can’t get over how that tiny change really updated the look of the room. And it was super inexpensive - would definitely recommend if you’re looking for most bang for your buck.

Lighting

Lighting was our second biggest budget category. We replaced one of our bedside lamps (so that we had a matching set) which we bought brand new for around $75.

And we replaced the ceiling light fixture - I got a great deal on a second-hand IKEA hanging light ($40) which turned out being the focal point of the room. It was simple to install and COMPLETELY changed the room.

*BONUS: We were able to sell the old ceiling fixture AND our old lamp and used the money towards our new lights - woohoo.

Closet

Our one small “construction” job was to create an open-concept closet. The original doors and layout of our closet were awkward and didn’t function well for us. We removed the doors and all shelving and replaced the multi-level clothing rods with with one single rod along the top. We moved our existing dresser into the closet and bought a new laundry hamper.

I am sooooo in love with this closet! If you’re on the fence about an open closet, I would say go for it!

Budget

Final budget tally:

Paint: $202

Lighting: $113

Construction Materiels: $44

Decor: $34

TOTAL BUDGET $393

*TIP: We paid for the entire makeover with cash we made from selling used items around our home. Eek!

And that’s it! The whole project took a few days and under $400.

We finished a couple of months ago and I’m still SO in love with this room. It’s perfectly calming and refreshing.

I hope this gives you some inspiration to create a home that you adore. On a budget of course :)

Happy DIY-ing!
