Organizing your home to improve your health
No counter space to cook? No time to meditate? No energy to go for a run?
Maybe your new health routines actually need to start with organizing your home…
Organizing your home is a gateway to soooo many amazing new things - optimal health is a HUGE one of them - and often the unsung hero.
Some might even argue that our homes are the foundation of our well being.
Hear me out.
I love a good meme about a messy house, never ending laundry and binging Netflix while ignoring the overflowing toy bin…who doesn’t?!…
BUT…
Maybe a clutter-free living room, organized fridge or easy laundry routine is exactly what you need to FULLY rest and recharge.
Let’s dig in…
#1 Reducing Mental Clutter
The burden that clutter and chaos puts on our mental health is REAL. And not discussed enough.
Yes we can shut the basement door and try to forget the piles of items that we don’t know what to do with. But does our mind really forget?
I hear this time and time again from clients.
They can no longer relax in their own home because they are mentally overwhelmed by all the STUFF.
After a big declutter session, home owners are visibly calmer and more at peace.
It is SO lovely to watch ⭐️
If you want to test it out, experiment with a small space that’s been bothering you: the Tupperware cupboard, your desk drawer or the trunk of your car.
Give it a shot and let me know how you feel after. More calm, peaceful, more mental clarity? More space to focus on health & wellness priorities maybe??
#2 Organized Kitchen = Healthy Eating
This one is so simple. Yet so effective.
Having a well organized kitchen makes eating healthy SO much easier.
When your pantry is stuffed with half eaten candy canes from 2018, you are going to eat accordingly.
When your pantry is a well organized space with just the right amount of all your favourite foods, healthy eating habits will naturally follow 🍎
A few easy steps to get there:
A Pantry/Fridge Re-set: Take everything out and purge anything expired or that’s never going to be eaten.
Use Baskets + Bins: This naturally creates zones for different categories and limits how much clutter can accumulate.
Use Labels: Eliminates any guesswork when putting groceries away (especially if you have helpers!)
If your fridge needs some TLC I have a video on creating an Organized Fridge with some of my favourite tips.
#3 Organized Spaces create Healthy Routines
Organized spaces naturally spill over into healthy routines. It’s inevitable.
Once you’ve decluttered your home and it feels like a million bucks, your routines will follow. You’ll want your mind and body to feel like a million bucks too!
You will be inspired to cook at home more, focus on moving your body, prioritize healthy relationships - and continue to declutter :))
Starting a meal planning routine when you can’t find a clean plate let alone a pen and paper, is HARD. But once you have a clean slate (i.e. an organized kitchen) it’s SO much easier.
To stick to your goal of biking fives times a week, the garage has to be organized enough to find the tire pump.
We need to set ourselves up for success!
If you are in the thick of survival mode and at the beginning of decluttering, this one will require some faith. Things get messy in the middle but I promise that new healthy habits are just around the corner.
#4 Organized Home = Space to MOVE
Maintaining the motivation to exercise can be hard enough under any circumstances. But when you are struggling to find enough floor space to do daily stretches, it’s VERY easy to give up.
Having clear areas encourages you to get down on the floor and MOVE.
Plain & Simple: If you have room to do a jumping jack, you’re more likely to do a jumping jack!
Extra Bonus: Kids are naturally squirmy - so having space for them to run, jump, chase each other and wrestle like wild animals - without the worry of them bumping into 100 things! - is HUGE. And ideally will encourage them to keep moving forever :)
*Hot Tip: Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube is the best!
#5 An Organized Home = More TIME (for Healthy Living)
Decluttering your home reduces routine household chores by 95%.
Whatttt?!
Ok fine, I made that statistic up. Butttt I bet it’s more like 99%.
For real.
The amount of time we spend buying stuff, cleaning stuff, moving stuff, arranging stuff, rearranging stuff, looking for lost stuff - is ENDLESS!!!
Imagine if you reduced that by even 25%. Bam. Instant free time!
And all that extra time is now available for new heathy habits:
Cooking healthy meals
Journalling
Medical Appointments you’ve been putting off
Flossing
Calling your Grandma
Watching Netflix without the overflowing toy bin haunting you!
Time is our most precious resource. So anything that instantly gives us more time is a no-brainer 🖤
Whatever your health goals are for this year - physical, mental, emotional - try starting with investing in your home.
I have a feeling it might be the perfect motivation you need to make this your healthiest year yet 💗
